ooc; I'm going to move the plot ahead with this since it really isn't moving...
Usdi padded into the water hole area, smacking his lips thirstily. He ducked his head under the branches that protected the pond, and was met with dirt. The water had all but dried up! In the center of the pond there was a tiny bit of warm, mucky water left, and he wrinkled his nose. The smell of the pond creatures' dead bodies was rank, and he fled the scene, tail streaming out behind him.

Heraclea ran ahead of Ajax, giggling like a maniac for no other reason than she was a pup running through the forest in the middle of summer. Could anything be more pleasureable? Her paws drummed a steady rhythm on the dusty, sun-baked ground as she ran and she expected at any moment to feel cool water splashing around her legs. Instead, half dried mud squished up between her toes and stuck under her claws. She made an involuntary "ick" face and came to a sudden stop. Looking around, she saw no pond, just the rotting carcuses of aquatic creatuers stuck into the muck. Wrinkling her nose in disgust she looked around for the pond she knew should have been here. Something was very wrong. "Ajax, what happened to the water?" she asked her brother, fighting the panic that threated to cloud her brain.

Ajax, a bit slower than his sister, came panting up and slid to a stop before he hit mud like she did. Baffled, she prodded the mud with an inquisitive paw, then shook it off with disgust. "I..I don't know," he whispered, feeling as though this were very bad. In the very center of the pond there was a small puddle of muddy water, but otherwise the wet ground was already starting to dry up. "We have to tell someone," he said, forcing himself to be calm for his sister. He had to be the rational one right?

Heraclea nodded and started to back out of the mud, the only problem was her paws weren't moving. She was stuck. The mud made slurping, suction-cup noises as she struggled to free her paws. Her struggle soon turned into all out panic. "Ajax!" she screamed, "I can't get out!" The harder she pulled the more stuck she seemed to become, but her every instinct told her to keep moving, to fight or flee.

Alarm etched into his face, Ajax jumped from side to side, trying to think of a solution. "Stop moving! You'll only sink faster!" He barked, afraid that Heraclea was going to drown herself in mud. Running farther up from the mud, he grabbed a long stick and dragged it back down to her. With a mighty heave he was anne to get on end of the stick in front of her face. "Grab hold!" He yelled through the stick clenched in his teeth.

Usdi leapt back from the sinking mud in surprise. "Ah! I-I'll go get someone!" He cried, scrambling out of the pond. "Don't fall in!" He called back, weakly trying to help the situation. Dust flew into the air as his paws dug into the ground to run faster.

Heraclea froze when Ajax told her her movments were making this worse. When the stick came into view she stretched her neck and chomped hard on the end of the stick. "Pull," she commanded, the sound coming out muffled through her clenched teeth.

Though he was a pup, Ajax threw himself backwards on that stick for all he was worth. Small growls escaping his clenched teeth, he managed to pull her mostly out of the mud. He was completely oblivious to Usdi; blood roared in his ears.

Heraclea's teeth ached as her brother pulled on one end of the stick and the mud held her tight. For a fleeting moment she was scared the tension would snap her in half, but then with a final, mighty tug Ajax succeeded in pulling her out. She tumbled forward as the mud released her and she continued to roll until the laws of physics graciously brought her to a stop. She stood, dizzy and feeling like her spine would never be the same shape again. "Thanks, Ajax," she mumbled, upset that her swimming plans hadn't gone as planned. "Let's go tell the others about the water, but can we leave out the part where I got stuck?" With all the tugging she hadn't noticed Usdi run for help.

Ajax nodded, panting. He had to sidestep his sister are she went rolling past. Dropping the stick, he looked over Heraclea as though she may have been harmed somewhere. As he turned to go tell the others, he couldn't help but laugh. "I won't tell them. They'll see it. All over your fur." Her lower end was caked in mud. He couldn't help it, he had to laugh.

"Shut up," snarled Heraclea, storming ahead of her brother, ears pressed flat agenst her head in humiliation.

Meekly he followed after her. He hadn't meant to seriously offend her, but supposedly females were touchy like that.

Noquisi pounded into the clearing, breathing hard. "Heraclea! You're alright! Ajax, are you alright, too? Come on, let's get you cleaned up..." She sighed, heart slowing down since the danger had passed.

"Just fine," growled Heraclea, sitting a little away from everyone else and starting to lick the mud out of her fur.

Ajax flocked to Noquisi, taking comfort in her familiarity. "Were ok. You are ok, aren't you?" He asked Heraclea hesitantly. Rubbing up against her leg, he tried to let go of what just happened.
